Queens County Farm Museum (QCFM) is one of the longest continually farmed sites in New York State, with over 325 years of continuous farming. Through educational programs, events, and museum services, we educate the public as to the significance of Queens County’s agricultural and horticultural past and heighten awareness of present-day sustainable agricultural and horticultural practices. QCFM is a New York City Landmark, on the National Register of Historic Places and a member of the Historic House Trust of New York City. QCFM also hosts a wide variety of educational field trips, public events and adult education programs.
Position Description
Queens County Farm is seeking a full-time STEM Coordinator for its busy and growing Education Department. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Education, the STEM Coordinator is responsible for the design, delivery, and training for higher level curricula (Middle School, High School, University-level) for Public Education, Summer Camp, STEM Camp, and School Field Trip Programs. The STEM Coordinator will encourage students’ awareness and appreciation of the environment, nature, and wildlife, broaden students’ knowledge of science concepts, and foster students’ commitment to the protection of the natural world.
Queens County Farm is well-known for its exciting, hands-on field trip offerings, which have been serving NYC students and teachers for over thirty years. Queens County Farm hosts over 30,000 students for field trips annually, visiting the Farm from all boroughs and Long Island. Additionally, the farm hosts adult education programming, off-site after school programming, a summer day camp, and educational components of numerous public events.
Responsibilities:
- Enhance, and elevate existing curricula for higher levels of programming for School Field Trips, Insider’s Tours, Public Education Programs, STEM Camp, Summer Camp, Scouting, and Outreach Programs
- Develop new programs for Public Education that are engaging, informative, fun for all age groups, and QCFM-mission focused, that also support collaborative relationships and partnerships with our community
- Propose and develop activities that are aligned with program goals and are age-appropriate
- Deliver programming for School Field Trips, Insider’s Tours, Public Education Programs, STEM Camp, Summer Camp, Scouting, and Outreach Programs
- Ensure that curricula are taught according to the requirements of program participants and in consideration of the QCFM’s mission
- Confirm that School Field Trip programming is aligned with NYS Standards of Learning
Train staff in the delivery of our Educational programs across all categories - Deliver farmhouse tours on occasional Saturdays and/or Sundays
Assisting in the maintenance of our 6 Education department teaching gardens, Apiary, and public Compost areas - Other duties as assigned by the Director of Education
Desired Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree with a strong background in biology or other sciences. Master’s degree preferred
- 2-3 years of experience with a primary focus on education programming and operations in a school, museum, or other nonprofit setting
- Experience developing or teaching hands-on, interdisciplinary programs and workshops a plus
- Excellent communication, writing, and editing skills with strong attention to detail
- Self-organization and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects
- Excellent interpersonal, collaboration and team-building skills and ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships across a diverse range of constituents
- Ability to take direction and work collaboratively within a team
- Knowledge of plant and animal life desirable
- Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures.
Hours & Compensation:
This is a full time, Monday-Friday, with the occasional late afternoon and/or evening hours for Public Education programs or projects. This position is probationary for a period of 3 months.
Salary is in the range of $48,000-55,000 for this position
