RegisterSeasonal Farm Tour – Winter
PreK – 12th grade: See what the farmers are preparing and planning for spring, take a peek into the greenhouse, and visit the animals, cold frames and cover crops. Meet our farm animals and learn about their year-round farm jobs. Discover winter foliage such as evergreen trees and pine cones. Note: This program is 10am–12pm; no onsite lunch available. $9 per student/parent chaperone.
A Walk in the Woods
PreK – 12th grade: Explore nature with this two hour all-outdoor program where we focus on the various different types of trees at the farm. We have identified over 50 types of trees on the farm, including historic species such as American Chestnuts, Paw Paws, a Willow Tree from the 1800s, black walnut trees, magnolias, pines, and maples. We will look at tree stumps to determine how old a tree is, whether or not it is currently or previously diseased, and discuss maple sugaring and sap collection. Note: This program is 10am–12pm; no onsite lunch available.
Farm Fibers
PreK – 12th grade: Does fashion begin on a farm? Students learn how Queens Farm raises livestock for fiber, cultivates our own plant based dyes, and the many techniques, historic and contemporary, used to turn fleece into cozy works of art. STEM learning comes alive when students meet our sheep and alpaca and hone their carding, spinning, and weaving skills with real sheep’s wool in our Fiber Lab.
Colonial Quilting
PreK – 12th grade: Examine quilts from America and abroad and discover how quilting has been used to tell stories throughout history. STEM learning comes alive as students learn the geometric foundation of different quilt blocks. Each student puts their creative skills to the test designing their own quilt squares and the program wraps up with a tour of the Farm, weather permitting.
18th Century Farmhouse History
Note: Our historic farmhouse can only accommodate one class per day (35 people maximum). Please note this program is not wheelchair accessible.
3rd – 12th grade: What was life like in Queens in 1772? Through the story of the 3rd generation Dutch farming family, students learn about NYC’s agricultural past and pick up a few practical life skills like food preparation and preservation in our 18th century kitchen. Students assist in preparing pickled cucumbers, and freshly churned butter. An outdoor tour provides a view of the farm in the winter months. Students return indoors to taste other methods of preservation and take their pickles home to enjoy.
