Stay tuned for more information and registration details about an exciting upcoming event at Queens County Farm Museum! You won’t want to miss this—mark your calendars!
Led by Queens County Farm Museum’s Livestock Manager, Sierra Farrar, this class will focus on how to keep your own healthy flock of laying hens and collect fresh, delicious eggs from your own backyard. This class covers the benefits of raising hens, NYC rules and guidelines, flock management, an introduction to different breeds, housing and outdoor space requirements, health maintenance, disease prevention, and cost considerations. Appropriate for those who already keep hens, or for the novice who is interested in starting a flock. A visit to our chicken coops will round out the learning experience.
Instructor Sierra Farrar is the Livestock Manager at Queens County Farm Museum.
Sierra began farming in 2020 in Southern California when the covid pandemic put her then music career on hold. Becoming quickly fascinated by the world of food and its ability to either destroy or build environmental and social resilience, she decided to pursue a career in agriculture head on. As a native of Colorado, her nostalgia for seasons brought her to the east coast where she worked at Harlem Valley Homestead. She quickly became their livestock manager and spent her time grazing beef cattle and chickens, raising pigs in the forest, and selling meat and vegetables to her local community. Her love of music and desire for city life moved her here to NYC where she is honored to be able to continue working with the animals she loves and educating people about livestock care and its role in our agricultural system.
